We harvested lots of chillies from the green house as well as broccolli from outside. We had our first frost on October 13.  All outside plants are destroyed except Broccolli, Salad mix and Ceylon Onions.

We planted these Ceylon Onions(shallots) on Sept. 25 after the full moon.  Some are planted couple of weeks earlier. They are already shooting out.  These seeds are from our May planted Ceylon onions. We have harvested around 130 lbs of onions from 30 lbs seeds and impressed with the growth in our Brampton clay soil.  Due to popular demand most of these onions went to our 9 team members’ family use.

We planted these onions in May.  We should’ve harvested them in July but due to the dry spell it was postponed. Then Weed took over the bed.  But we managed to harvest them in Middle of August and had a good size Ceylon onions. From a 2 feet by 100 feet bed, we were able to harvest around 120 lbs of Onions.   We planted around 30 lbs of them in the clay soil. These are flower shoots from the Ceylon Onions. There is a huge demand amongst the Canadian Tamil population.  Currently, a bunch is being sold upto $10 at the Canadian Tamil Grocery stores. Demand is being met through imports from Carribbean and South Asia but freshness is a key issue for the consumers. These are the Ceylon Onions from Scarborough backyard. These were planted early May.  The flowers are also harvested and they are a popular item among the Canadian Tamil population. The flowers can be sauteed or chopped up to flavour salads, curry stews or soups.
