Season 2011 Warm Lovers Started

We have been very busy planning out 2011 farming season.  We will be farming up to 10 acres with 80 varieties of mixed vegetables.   We got an exciting line up of heirloom, organic and exotic global vegetables. We will also have 3 green houses to extend our season.  We are expanding our CSAs from 5 to 25 and starting two farmers’ market locations as well. Here is a section of the seeds.  These seeds are already [Read More...]
Frozen South Asian veggies inside hoop house

Frozen South Asian veggies inside hoop house

Our visit on December 6 was a pleasant one.  We had - 8 C degree temperatures with over night temperatures going even below that. Our cold crops were in excellent condition but the warm lovers were toast.  We were surprised to find eggplants and chillies frozen and in excellent condition. We harvested them all and then cleared the plants and tossed them in the compost pile. The ground was really wet and we didn’t [Read More...]
End of warm lovers inside the sustainable hoop house

End of warm lovers inside the sustainable hoop house

We harvested the last of the peppers, eggplants and bitter melons this week from the green house. Our hoop house doesn’t have any electricity or running water.  Most of the watering was done by collecting rain water. Last weekend’s cold snap killed these plants for good.  We were able to extend their life span by atleast a month. We also have only one layer of 6 mm plastic and our doors are not insulated properly.

These plants are still producing inside the green house.  They are almost 4 feet tall. This particular plant was almost got killed by the Potato Beetles but our squishing abilities saved the plant and got rid of the beetles for good. Usually two of these eggplants will go for $4 at South Asian stores.  [Read More...]

Jaffna Brinjal in Brampton Outside Lot

We started these South Asian Brinjals from seed in our basement grow rack. We planted them inside the low tunnel green house and outside. Low Tunnel Brinjal plants are much bigger in size and each have over 5 or so brinjals.  We have been harvesting the green house Brinjals for our team’s family usage. The outdoor Brinjals are finally picking up! The best way to enjoy Brinjals is by slicing them and grilling them on [Read More...]

Jaffna Brinjal(Eggplant) in Brampton

Jaffna Brinjal is a variety of Indian egg plants.  It is a very popular item among the South Asian population. Each is sold for over $2 but getting them fresh is always a challenge since they are imported from South Asia and Carribbean. We developed the seeds from backyards and used our basement grow rack to grow them. Planted these ones inside hoop house on second week of May and the outside ones on May 24 weekend. Outside [Read More...]
