Season 2011 Warm Lovers Started

We have been very busy planning out 2011 farming season.  We will be farming up to 10 acres with 80 varieties of mixed vegetables.   We got an exciting line up of heirloom, organic and exotic global vegetables. We will also have 3 green houses to extend our season.  We are expanding our CSAs from 5 to 25 and starting two farmers’ market locations as well. End of warm lovers inside the sustainable hoop house

End of warm lovers inside the sustainable hoop house

We harvested the last of the peppers, eggplants and bitter melons this week from the green house. Our hoop house doesn’t have any electricity or running water.  Most of the watering was done by collecting rain water. Last weekend’s cold snap killed these plants for good.  We were able to extend their life span by atleast a month. We also have only one layer of 6 mm plastic and our doors are not insulated properly.

King of the North pepper has been a good producer this season. Inside the green house, they were growing wild and providing many good quality peppers.  We lost some to the slugs. Outside, during hot July/August period they were producing smaller peppers but with the rainy September they started producing more bigger and juicier peppers. It definitely goes on our 2011 seed list.

Next year, we will get a permanent lot where we will be dumping lots of organic matter and compost.  [Read More...]

We inter cropped the tomatoes and egg plant beds with extra pepper plants. We initially thought they died off under the pressure but was surprised to find them alive with the best quality peppers. They were also safe from slug and pest attacks. It also help us maximize the valuable green house space.
